Beach Bag of Coal or Sparkling Diamonds?

So I've been thinking. Our beach needs to be treated like a valued, cherished, velvet bag of sparkling diamonds. For goodness sake, it is the longest freshwater beach in the world. It is disrespected, dumpy, forgotten and trashy. In fact, if you travel outside of Wasaga Beach and ask others their opinion of our town, they will tell you it's scuzzy. Is this how we want our hometown to be viewed? Do you believe our town has the potential to be a global gem? I do. I have spoken about this before. I have heard the whispers and complaints of residents. Everyone loves it here, but it needs radical beautification and an economic wave.

5. Busker Evenings Every Thursday and Sunday night on the Beaches!

6. Live Free Theatre on the beach

7. Lifeguard Championships

8. Beach Boys Festival

9. Beach Fashion Show on The Beach

10. Food Truck Spots every day

11. Afforable, clean and classy lodging in winter in the beach with free shuttles to mountain

12. Public Art

13. Fountains, Statues

14. Gardens!

15. An art gallery

16. Town Wide Garage Sale 4x June, July, August and Sept. (NO PERMITS - they are ridiculous)

What ideas would you suggest?

From an old post I penned:

1. Beach Beautification Committee - to make sure the beach is designed with specific period architecture to attract residents, businesses and visitors alike. (pick a style: West Palm Beach, Key West, Malibu, Coney Island, The Beaches in Toronto.) In keeping with this style, all decisions must first be approved by this town committee to ensure Wasaga Beach grows in a 'beautifully' branded way. Invite designers and forward thinkers from all over the world to participate.
2. Bicycle Paths - every where, every where, every where. We must become 'The Bicycle Capital of Canada'. Here are 28 Reasons to Bike.
3. Mandatory Rain barrels & Tree planting - reasons here. (you might freak out when you watch it.)
4. A sign. A wonderful, quaint, nostalgic, beach sign on either end to welcome guests. If you think it will stop tall loads, then make it high enough or make it have a swing mechanism.
5. A old-fashioned cinema with a cafe on the side. Years ago in Peterborough, I would frequent a hip little place that had 2 meal seatings per night and afternoon. You could watch the movie first and then eat or vice versa. It was the coolest meeting place in the city and it had such a sense of community and entertainment. You are going to love this. Andhey....A Beach Film Festival in October too! (we need to extend our tourism season)
6. A music hall with state-of-the-art acoustics for musical and theatrical performances. Sorry, but the RecPlex just doesn't cut it. (The old theatre in Lindsay, Ontario....now that's a music hall)
7. Legalize golf carts. Seniors love their golf carts. Allow them to go on separate paths beside the bicycle path.
8. An Arts & Culture centre. Gallery, Beach Gift Shop, Museum, halls, displays etc.
9. A really, really, really well-marketed and branded 'daily' farmers market. (slow food) And, a fabulous Night Market for Friday and Saturday nights. And, a Christmas Market like the one in Prague.
10. 'Beach Blue Pumpkin Festival' in the Fall. All residents spray paint their pumpkins beach blue and sprinkle silver sparkles all over it. You can actually grow blue pumpkins...did you know that! Let's make it a new by-law. Only blue pumpkins in the beach in the fall and at Hallowe'en. (festival like Meaford's Scarecrows)
11. Mermaid Parade and Mermaid Ball. Here is Coney Island's Parade. FAQ. Check out the Mermaid Ball website.
12. A Santa Claus parade that will bring in thousands....more bands please!!!

Literary Festival Takes Over Collingwood

COLLINGWOOD - Listen to an author - or be inspired to become one yourself - at the inaugural edition of Wordstock, a celebration of the written word in downtown Collingwood on Sept. 10 and 11.For the last several months, a dedicated committee of volunteers have been putting the pieces together for the day-long event that will feature something for the entire family.Looking for something funny? Former Toronto Star humour writer turned mystery writer Linwood Barclay will be one of the featured authors, along with Detective Murdoch series author Maureen Jennings, and John Geiger, whose latest work explores the fate of the Franklin Expedition.
The event also features local authors such as Dorris Heffron, and Karolyn Smardz-Frost, who won the Governor General's Award for Non-Fiction for I've Got a Home in Glory Land, the story of two Black slaves who made their escape to Toronto in the late 19th century.
Perhaps your tastes tend toward the edgy. The Toronto Poetry Slam Team is composed of the top four poets from the Toronto Poetry Slam season, representing the cream of the spoken-word crop. The TPS Team will bring a 'mini-slam' to Collingwood, hosted by David Silverberg, the artistic director of Toronto Poetry Project.
From the west, Owen Sound Poet Laureate and founder of the Grey/Bruce Slam Poetry Team Kristan Anderson will also perform, along with Toronto poet Robert Priest, and Collingwood's own Harry Posner.If you're more inclined toward the artistic side, first-time author Ruth Garrett will take you through the highs and lows of getting published, while On The Bay editor Janet Lees and freelance writer Judy Ross will provide insight on the business of freelancing.
Wordstock is more than just about books and poetry; music will also have its place. Local musicians Aaron Garner and Jason Redman will join Toronto-based singer/songwriter/guitarist Patrick Ballantyne to present a workshop on songwriting and performing music.
There's also a full slate of activities for teens and the younger set, including rap, graffiti and creative writing workshops, puppetry, and a live musical performance by the Funky Mama's.The whole thing kicks off the night before at a gala featuring local performers stretching their usual boundaries to interpret the written word through storytelling, theatre, songwriting, poetry, music, and visual arts.
The event is a partnership of the Town of Collingwood, Downtown Collingwood BIA, and the Collingwood Public Library."The community support has been outstanding," said organizing committee chair Marg Scheben-Edey.Scheben-Edey says the event is a celebration of Collingwood, and three of its most important assets: the new, LEED Gold Collingwood Public Library, the soon to be completed downtown, and the people of Collingwood."So many people have come together to bring this festival to life," she said. Olympic Torch Day in Wasaga Beach

This was my Sister-in-Law carrying the torch yesterday in Hanover! Torch today in the beach for 19 minutes approx. 11am. More pics here from Perk News. Olympic Torch Arrives In Wasaga Beach

The Olympic torch will be in Wasaga Beach for 19 minutes on Tues., Dec. 29.
Officials hope people will come out and cheer on the torchbearers as they travel through town.
RBC Royal Bank is a corporate sponsor for the event. Wasaga Beach RBC branch manager Glen Godovitz said they were able to release the route as of Dec. 15. On Dec. 29, day 61 of the Olympic torch relay, the torch will start in Owen Sound and travel to Meaford, Thornbury, Blue Mountain, Collingwood, Wasaga Beach, Elmvale, Penetanguishene, Midland, Creemore, Wyebridge, Angus, CFB Borden, Alliston, Cookstown and Barrie. The torch will arrive in Wasaga Beach as part of a special convoy of vehicles including torchbearer shuttles, media, support vehicles and police. Officials say temporary rolling road closures will happen along the route to ensure the safety of torchbearers and spectators.

The route begins at the Wasaga Beach Public Library, located at 120 Glenwood Dr., at 11:12 a.m. continues along Glenwood, turning right at Main Street, left onto River Road West and stops at Wasaga Stars Arena for a brief photo op before heading off to the next community at 11:31 a.m.

It is still not known who exactly is carrying the torch at 300-metre intervals. Wasaga Beach resident Faye Luppe is carrying the torch from the library to town hall. Wasaga Beach resident and Collingwood RBC branch manager Penny Baker is carrying the torch in Collingwood on Dec. 29 and Wasaga Beach resident Rebecca Kilpatrick, also an employee at RBC in Collingwood, will carry the torch in Barrie on Dec. 30. RBC will have a tent set up outside of the branch, located at 654 River Rd., W., where officials will be hading out pompoms and thunder sticks to help spectators cheer on torchbearers. Godovitz said they will also be serving free pizza from Boston Pizza and will be distributing 250 Purdy's chocolates, an official event sponsor. The library is inviting people to make Olympic torches from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. and then cheer on the torchbearers.
The free event is open to people of all ages. Wasaga Beach musician Tyler Firestone is performing at the torch ceremony in Collingwood. Firestone will lead the singing of Oh Canada as the torch comes along Hurontario Street at 10:04 a.m. and will be performing on the stage afterwards at 10:16 a.m. Amanda Coles, of Barrie, is the winner of the RBC DeNovo Olympic Contest. Coles entered the national contest, open to RBC branches that have opened within the last 10 months, at the Wasaga Beach branch. She has won a $15,000 trip for four to the Olympic Games, including tickets to six events. Each branch also awarded a second place prize of a set of sterling silver Olympic coins from the Royal Canadian Mint. Beverley Burton was the local winner.

The Kinette Club's Christmas at the Beach Tour of Homes will feature seven homes, all decorated for the season. The tour takes place Nov. 14 and 15 and features the work of area decorators and florists who festively dress the homes for the upcoming Christmas season.
Seven Wasaga Beach residents have volunteered the use of their homes. Some of the homes will be decorated by the homeowners and some by professional decorators Carol Kubiac, Stacey Scott, Tami Picken and Amy Wilson. Wasaga Beach florists at Blue Shores, Beach Blooms and Wasaga Flowers and Collingwood florists from Floral Renaissance will add the greenery. The show takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Tickets cost $15, which includes assess to the Tea Room and One of a Kind Artisan Show at the RecPlex. Frequently, festivals, galleries, small performance spaces and small retail spring up in these same areas through the work of resident artists, generating a vibrant street life that acts as a deterrent to crime, dramatically enhancing the quality of neighborhoods for both the people who live there and people who visit. But do Wasaga Beach Artists have dedicated spaces to work and live in?

Space/real estate concerns are a primary issue for Wasaga Beach artists. Is the Mayor's Office working to retain existing spaces for artists and creating new ones?

Wasaga Beach needs to create spaces that:
are permanently dedicated to artists through deed restrictions or similar legal mechanisms;
are located in buffer zones between industrial and residential neighborhoods in locations that do not support traditional family housing; and
offer live/work spaces (space where artists combine their residence with their work area, typically in an open floor plan offering large, flexible work areas) or work-only spaces (where residential use is not allowed) for rent and for purchase at a variety of prices with a preference for Wasaga Beach residents.

In a perfect world (in the near future), what Live/Work Guidelines would be created to help Artists?

But because Wasaga Beach "could" host so many varied vacation and cultural experiences, it benefits us all to expand our definition of tourists as people who live close by, in the next town over, or clear across the province.

Blue Pumpkins will be taking over the beach! Wasaga Beach is hosting its first annual The Blue Pumpkin Festival' this coming October. (Yeah! Remember my wish list?) Get your pumpkins spray painted, join in on the golf tournament, showcase your blue pumpkin creativity - do you grow blue pumpkins? It all came about because of Linda's blue sparkly pumpkin. Now it's all the rage! Perhaps we will enter the book of records for the most blue pumpkins. Tell your neighbours, friends and family to visit the beach in October. You must experience this. I posted about the fog here too. It comes on fast; unexpected, creepy. It mists our entire beach town. Often it can be a welcome 'cooling' on a hot day. You won't want to miss it. It happened yesterday on the first day of summer.

You Should Visit Balm Beach

It's like stepping back into the 1930's and 40's. It is delightful, safe, quaint and tiny (no pun intended as it is located in Tiny Township on Georgian Bay in Ontario, Canada) - and it's tiny, but it's beachy-mighty! (I posted about it last June here) What a perfect location for a family picnic! Balm Beach is just a short, happy, meandering drive away from Wasaga Beach; you will love peeping at all the beach houses and cottages. We love to go to the world famous Georgian Grill. It has been a shore side restaurant and family arcade since 1934. You'll enjoy delicious homemade (yes truly!) burgers and poutine and onion rings to kill for. Top off the fun with a soft-serve ice cream cone. (see full menu here) The price is so right (affordable) and guess what? - my flag art hangs in there too! WASAGA BEACH (June 18, 2009) –

Sunshine on a Cloudy Day will hold its Third Birthday Celebration Extravaganza between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm on Saturday June 27th, 2009 at 174 Main Street and at Dusk at 198 Main Street in Wasaga Beach. Chris Carrigan of 97.7 The Beach will be live on location from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. The day’s festivities will include give-aways, “P.O.P.” Raffles, a Dunk Tank and a row of midway style games with prizes: 3 in a Row, Plinko, Ring Toss, Basketball Challenge and Golf Challenge. There will be live performances by Teknical Difficulties and Ear Candy, and a “Wet and Wild Car Wash” in the Dusk parking lot at 198 Main Street. I took a sunny visit to the garden centre at Superstore today. It was busy! Have a look. Lush and full. Their plants are exclusively from Canadian growers – and most are grown close to where we live. They’ve been working with local growers since their beginnings. It helps local economies and ensures we get the best quality. Long ago, they learned that buying local allows them to offer us plants that spend more time in greenhouses where they grow strong and mature, plus they travel less so they arrive in their stores fresh and ready for our purchase. Cool.

O.K. Enough already. With all due respect, the police presence is complete and utter overkill. Our town doesn't look very 'open' to visitors (or residents), nor does it look very friendly - you (OPP) are going to scare away families - I know you are working professionally and with great care & concern to make our home safe, but I believe you are making Wasaga Beach look unsafe - plus - can't you just go to some hideaway command center beach location and be ready when we actually need you? I don't think I'm the only one who feels this way. Am I?

NOTE: My Mother was hesitant for me to speak my mind about this and my Father said, 'For goodness sake, if the Tamil Tigers can take over the Gardiner Expressway, surely Patti can use her right to freedom of speech to publish her own opinion' !!! Go Dad!
